Lobbs Lake opening, Troutmasters Competition & Permit Offer Extension

With the sun shining I’ve spent the week working on the fishery and I am pleased to report that Lobbs Lake is ready to re-open on Monday 1st April, while Anchor Lake has had some bank maintenance in preparation for the Troutmasters competition. The fish have been enjoying the warm weather too and have been readily taking dry flies or wets fished just below the surface with the most popular patterns being Klinkhammers & Damsel patterns fished on a slow retrieve.

Lobbs Lake re-opening

Lobbs Lake will re-open for family fishing on Monday 1st April 2019 and will have a very special separate permit to Anchor Lake, designed to encourage families to introduce their children to the thrill of fishing. The lake is heavily stocked and is reserved for spinning & bait fishing only, ensuring a safe environment for young anglers. There will also be the opportunity for children to feed the fish with bags of pellets available for sale during shop hours.

Cheap Fishing for Children

So what about those very special prices? Having two children of our own we understand how expensive life is these days so we have decided to do our bit and help you have an inexpensive day out with your family and the chance to take home a Trout for tea.

There will be no up front cost to pay and Trout will be charged at just £5 per fish! So if your little people don’t catch, you don’t pay! All trout caught are to be retained (strictly no catch & release on Lobbs) and the fee posted in the box after fishing e.g. 2 fish = £10, 4 fish = £20 & 10 fish = £50 Please note that prior to fishing supervising adults MUST complete the sign-in form situated in the permit hut, or you may sign in at the shop during our opening hours. There is an age restriction of up to 14 years old on Lobbs Lake.

Please note we do of course expect adults to be helping with casting, supervising and ensuring safety, however this special rate is not available for adults fishing on their own. Lobbs Lake is reserved for children only. If you would like to take a budding young fly angler fishing please remember that children up to 14 years old can share an adults permit on Anchor Lake, including our super value catch & release option. Look out for some very special news regarding Anchor Permits next week.

Don’t have any fishing kit?

We have a stock of perfect sized rods and reels for hire, plus nets priced at just £5 per kit, per session. Spinners, lures, bait, hooks & floats are available to purchase during shop hours, please note that these consumables are not part of the hire kit and can be taken away for your next fishing trip. And if your children really become addicted (we hope so!) there will be inexpensive junior kits available to buy.

Picnic tables now line the banks of Lobbs Lake making it the perfect spot to enjoy a family day out. The café is open for refreshments too and will have a full menu & longer opening hours available later in April.

Beautiful location, River fishing & Fresh Trout

After the lovely warm weather February gave us followed by the incredible winds and rain brought by Storm Gareth, Anchor Lake is looking in fantastic condition and has been fishing incredibly well. Since the 1st March anglers have been enjoying an average of just over 4 fish each with Orange Blobs, Blue Flash Damsels and Bloodworms being the favoured fly patterns.

Laura, Alan & Ellie Burns from Builth Wells visited the fishery on a lovely sunny day. It was Ellies second time fishing. Thank you, Laura, for sending through some lovely photos including the first photo in this report.

Laura said “Visited last Friday, had a lovely day! Had the daughter with us, and she was so chuffed to catch a fish! She cast the line out herself caught a lovely fish about 3lb in weight. It was only her second fishing outing! She missed loads, so was really pleased she managed to land one at least! Hopefully will see you again next time we are down your way visiting! It’s a great place you have and the fish are really good fighters! The three of us had a really good day!”

February Fishing Update & Lobbs Lake Re-opening

Since my last report which was written whilst there was snow on the ground, we have had Storm Eric followed by the most glorious February weather. It has been lovely to see so many anglers fishing Anchor Lake in the sun. The lake is beautifully clear with the fish cruising just below the surface. All areas around the lake have been fishing well with a wide range of flies being successful along with a slow retrieve.

Anchor Lake Tactics

Throughout February a large number of flies have been working well with Bloodworm & Blob patterns continuing to be successful along with Sedge, Diawl Bachs, Damsels and Hares Ears. The fish have been close to the surface earlier in the day and moving down a little deeper when the sun is very bright.
