Cafe Update, New Opening Hours & Winter Permit Offer

I hope that you enjoyed a relaxing Easter in the sunshine. The lakes have been very busy with the fish sitting near the top of the water making for some great dry fly fishing for anglers on Anchor Lake. Lobbs Lake has been busy too and it has been lovely to see so many youngsters catching their own fish. The Café has received a lot of attention through out April and I am really pleased with how it is taking shape. It is now stocked with a selection of refreshments, has a full menu as well as artwork and gift ideas. New opening hours are at the bottom of this report.

Anchor Lake

With the beautiful weather over Easter the fish were sitting high in the water with the most successful patterns being Diawl Bachs, Klinkhammers, Hares Ears and Buzzers, however the stormy weather has changed this and pushed the fish a little deeper with Bloodworms and Blobs working well. The fish have also been preferring a slow retrieve.

Steve Dye from Fareham caught this cracking 5lb Rainbow Trout from Anchor Lake and said “Brilliant mornings fishing”. Steve caught his fish by midday so even had time to enjoy a cup of tea next to Lobbs Lake.

Lobbs Lake

Since re-opening on the 1st April 2019 Lobbs Lake has welcomed several families. Spinners have been working well along with bread. Magnus & Sid travelled down from Bristol with their Dad for a days fishing and caught 5 fish from Lobbs Lake. They then barbecued one for lunch and took the others home for another day.

Café

As mentioned above I have been very busy getting the Cafe organised. Not only do I have a full stock of smoked fish and refreshments but also the very talented Dorset based Jessamy Keily of JinKs Art has several pieces of her amazing artwork displayed in the Cafe for sale, including the stunning ‘Go against the flow’. Alongside the images I am now stocking a selection of Jessamys greeting cards in similar designs.

Troutmasters Results, Cafe & Easter Opening Times

Since my last report we have continued with fishery maintenance to make fishing areas on Anchor Lake even easier to access and on Sunday 14th April 2019 the Troutmasters competition took place – full results below. Lobbs Lake has now been open for two weeks and has welcomed several families & children. It has been fantastic to see so many of these first-time anglers catch their own tea. Easter is almost here, and it looks like we are in for some lovely weather – perfect for enjoying a cream tea or ice cream next to the lakes.

Troutmasters Results

Well done to everyone who took part in the Troutmasters competition on Sunday 14th April 2019. The competition took place over four hours and even with the freezing cold easterly wind the ten anglers that attended managed a rod average of 2.4 fish per angler, with several anglers heading back to Anchor lake to continue fishing after the match had ended. Best tactics throughout this colder spell have been to fish deeper and slower.

Anchor Lake

It has been great to see anglers using the whole of Anchor Lake to fish with the usually dismissed end of the lake seeing some amazing fishing action. The depth of the far end of the lake was increased in 2015/2016 from 2ft to around 8ft.

Nick has been busy while back from London strimming the lakes and the fish certainly seemed to be enjoying all the bugs falling in from the strimmed reeds and were rising all around.

December Update – Lakes Improvements, The Shop Re-Opens & Smoked Trout returns to Exe Valley

The summer weather was not kind to the fishery requiring the lakes to be closed while Sue took on a job, as for several months there was no cashflow available via the business. We are pleased to say that Sue has now returned to the fishery full time and Anchor Lake is fully open and fishing really well. For those who enjoy the sport but don’t want the fish, remember we are one of the only West Country venues with a Catch & Release Permit available for just £25.

Shop & Café Re-Opens

We have welcomed many anglers since re-opening the lakes in October including three larger groups throughout November whom we are happy to report have enjoyed some really good sport. The fish have been in the surface layers, responding well to natural or black patterns. Now that Sue has returned on a full-time basis the website will be regularly updated and she will be available at the lakes from 10.00am to 2.00pm Tuesday to Friday. The fishery will also be manned by one of us from 9.00am until 1.00pm on a Saturday.

Please note that the lakes will be open as usual on a 7 day per week self-serve basis. During shop opening hours permits can be paid for by debit/credit card, light refreshments and tackle will also be available along with our new range of smoked fish, duck & cheese. The shop will be closed on Sunday & Monday.

Lake Improvements

Bankside maintenance has continued on both Anchor and Lobbs lakes with more non-slip turf laid, the woodchip path replenished, and a new handrail installed between Lobbs & Anchor Lake. Following the poor growing season for stock fish we are also happy to report that the fish farm is now fully replenished and the lakes are being stocked regularly with our famous hard fighting Trout.
