“Fishing for Force” Charity event

We hope that you all enjoyed your bank holiday weekend. What beautiful weather we have had during the last couple of weeks. Making the most of the conditions we welcomed the Devon Salmon & Trout Association for their Junior Fly-Fishing Day. Twelve young people attended the event and I am pleased to report that every one of them caught a fish! If you have a budding angler who would like to join in next time, a further Junior Day will be held in September 2019. Look out for details to be published soon.

On Wednesday 29th May 2019 we welcomed the “Fishing for Force” Charity event to Exe Valley Fishery. See the report below from Chris Guest of Exmoor Fly Fishing

The Fishing for FORCE Cancer charity day was organised by John Dawson and held at the superb Exe Valley Fishery by kind permission of Sue & Nick Hart.

The day started overcast and dimpsey in other words Exmoor weather! Jackie joined me to learn how to fly fish in no time she was throwing nice loops so it was on to the lake ...no pulling lures here it was small flies from the word go .

Jackie with her first ever Trout

She was soon into her first fish of the day, a quick burger and coffee then I took Rory under my wing it wasn’t long before I heard the shout “ I’ve got one I’ve got one” an epic battle ensued before a fin perfect Exe Valley rocket was drawn over the net....several more soon followed.

The fishery is fishing really well and the Trout are up in the water and will readily take a dry.
Thanks must go to John Dawson, Sue Hart and the ladies from Force for putting the day on and raising lots of money for the charity......Chris”

It was great to host this event in aid of such a worthy cause and both Nick & I would like to extend our thanks to the organisers for all their hard work, especially as several young people were introduced to fly fishing during the day while several hundred pounds were raised for charity.

Next time look out for an up to date report on how the lakes are fishing (although the pictures above speak for themselves!) and also there is a great offer available for all those people looking for a very special fathers day gift.

Thanks as always for reading and please remember if I can be of any assistance the number to call is 01398 323008

Fishery Updates & Junior Fishing Day

The last two weeks have been busy at Exe Valley Fishery with the lakes continuing to fish well and the Cafe starting to welcome people through the doors. Anglers have even pre-ordered food to be delivered to the lakeside. The fishing has been varied this week from dry flies catching earlier in the week, then after the rain on Wednesday evening the fish were being caught deeper down and finally finishing the week with glorious sunshine & a lot of top water activity.

Anchor Lake

The most successful fly patterns on Anchor Lake over the two weeks have been varied including Buzzers, Damsels & Bloodworms or Dry Flies including Yellow Owls & Sedge patterns. A slow retrieve or static approach have still been producing the best results.

Recently we have welcomed several newcomers to the lakes including Matt Baines who travelled from Torquay to fish with us and had a very successful day.

Matt Baines from Torquay said ' Seven fish landed - ranged from 2 1/2lb - 4 1/2lb - very good day.'

Our normal lake opening hours are 8.00am to 6.00pm although fishing outside of these times can be organised in advance and as Exe Valley Fishery regular Ben Cheeld found out it can be the perfect time to fish when he arrived for a late afternoon / evening session.

Troutmasters Results, Cafe & Easter Opening Times

Since my last report we have continued with fishery maintenance to make fishing areas on Anchor Lake even easier to access and on Sunday 14th April 2019 the Troutmasters competition took place – full results below. Lobbs Lake has now been open for two weeks and has welcomed several families & children. It has been fantastic to see so many of these first-time anglers catch their own tea. Easter is almost here, and it looks like we are in for some lovely weather – perfect for enjoying a cream tea or ice cream next to the lakes.

Beautiful day to enjoy fishing with Grandad.

Troutmasters Results

Well done to everyone who took part in the Troutmasters competition on Sunday 14th April 2019. The competition took place over four hours and even with the freezing cold easterly wind the ten anglers that attended managed a rod average of 2.4 fish per angler, with several anglers heading back to Anchor lake to continue fishing after the match had ended. Best tactics throughout this colder spell have been to fish deeper and slower.

  1. Chris Short with 5 fish weighing 16lb 8oz

  2. Keith Ratcliffe with 4 fish weighing 11lb 12oz

  3. Philip Duckett with 3 fish weighing 10lb 12oz

  4. Mary Ratcliffe with 3 fish weighing 7lb 12oz

  5. Ben Cheeld with 3 fish weighing 6lb 4oz

  6. Richard Cooper with 2 fish weighing 5lb 8oz

  7. Mike Duckett with 2 fish weighing 5lb

  8. Sam Shepherd - Junior with 2 fish weighing 4lb 12oz

Anchor Lake

It has been great to see anglers using the whole of Anchor Lake to fish with the usually dismissed end of the lake seeing some amazing fishing action. The depth of the far end of the lake was increased in 2015/2016 from 2ft to around 8ft.

Ken Goode from Bournemouth took full advantage of being the only angler fishing the corner. After purchasing our newly reduced 10 fish Catch & Release ticket Ken had a great time catching & releasing all 10 fish at the far end of the lake.

Nick has been busy while back from London strimming the lakes and the fish certainly seemed to be enjoying all the bugs falling in from the strimmed reeds and were rising all around.
